LOHS Teacher of the Year Nominations

Dear LOHS Families,

Here at LOHS we are very proud of the many dedicated and outstanding teachers that work very hard for the success of our students.  This is the time of year where we work with Oakland Schools and select a Lake Orion High School teacher as our 'Teacher of the Year'.  This year we would love to have input from our families as we select our award winner.

Below is a link that will gather information that is necessary for the selection committee.  If you believe a LOHS teacher has gone above and beyond for your child and/or family, we ask that you please complete the questions and short essay by January 19th.

Thank you for your assistance in helping us to recognize our outstanding staff members for the great work they do.

Sincerely,

Mr. Stephen Hawley, Principal

 The Music Man

Do you have a Screenager? Find out on April 24 Screenagers
Do you find that your student is using a cell phone or playing video games more and more each day? Are they continuously checking their social media? Are they losing sleep or having difficulties paying attention because of these distractions? Are you getting phone calls from the teacher because of too much cell phone usage in the classroom? If you answered yes to any other these questions, then Screenagers is a movie you need to see.

On April 24 at 7:00 p.m., the Lake Orion High School PTO will be sponsoring a viewing of Screenagers. This is a documentary about teenagers and the challenges parents face with cell phones, video games and/or technology. The event is open to the entire district. CLICK HERE for a preview!

LOHS donates $5,000 to Cell Phones for Soldiers

Thanks to strong student participation and the generosity of local businesses, Lake Orion High School's "Cell Out for Soldiers" in January raised a total of $5,000 for the national Cell Phones for Soldiers charitable organization. This group provides phones and calling cards to soldiers overseas so they can stay in-touch with their loved ones back home. Earlier this month, the school's Leadership Workshop class that managed the Cell Out presented a symbolic check to Principal Steve Hawley and the high school staff to thank them for their support. Pictured, left to right, J.P. Gurgel, Andy Poulos, Ryan Kolp, Jessica Laconis, Emma Modock, Chelsea Turk, Maddison Stephens and Principal Hawley.

Lake Orion successfully hosts Student Council State Conference in Grand Rapids!

Lake Orion's student leadership class set the bar to a new high as host of this year’s Michigan Association of Student Councils State Conference in Grand Rapids earlier this month.  Our students arranged for Michigan State football coach Mark Dantonio to be a keynote speaker at the event, which included 2,000-plus high school leadership students from more than 100 schools across the state. This was the first time Coach Dantonio had ever addressed such a large group of teenagers and his message to push through challenges and “win” every day fit perfectly with the crowd, made up of leaders in their schools and communities. He shared his own leadership experiences with the students, stressing the importance of setting goals and the importance of communication. Lake Orion’s leadership class planned the entire weekend event, from establishing the theme “Free to Lead” to selecting the speakers and organizing group exercises and small group presentations. Several LO students also were recognized individually, including Lindsey Hodge, Unsung Hero Award; Madison Stephens, Ryan Kolp, Emma Modock and Jessica Laconis, Award of Excellence; and JP Gurgel, Exceptional Service Project Nominee.

Superintendent forming LO Legislative Advocacy Committee Lake Orion Community Schools

More legislative actions are having an effect on the financing of our schools, as well as  various aspects of our instructional programs. It is important that our legislators learn the effects, both positive and negative, that their decisions are ultimately having on our students. While educators meet and communicate with our legislators, it is important that they hear from all of our stakeholders. I am inviting members of our community to be a part of a Lake Orion Legislative Advocacy Committee.

If you have an interest in participating in this important initiative, we ask that you complete a short survey indicating your interest and level of preferred involvement. The survey will remain open for two weeks (until April 28). Our goal is to have a broad representation of stakeholders; parents, educators and community members. CLICK HERE to access the survey. Thank you in advance for considering to be a member of the LO Legislative Advocacy Committee.

Marion Ginopolis, Superintendent
