With a strong sense of community, Birgit McQuiston has been involved with the school district in many different ways since moving here in 2000. Her administrative strengths and interests led her to be involved in School Improvement Teams of Blanche Sims Elementary School, Oakview Middle School and Lake Orion High School. She has also served on the District School Improvement Committee and was the PTO President of LOHS for two school years. Her in-depth knowledge of the district led her to run for the Board of Education in 2011. Since then, she has served as Vice-President for 3 years, Secretary (current officer position), led the initiative to implement a Board Self Assessment Committee in 2013, helped lead the way for the Curriculum Committee to be re-established, has served on the Policy Committee since 2011, and is also currently a part of the Lamp of Learning Committee. Believing that Professional Development is a part of being a lifelong learner, Birgit has actively pursued opportunities to improve her skills as a Board member. Within the first six months of being elected, Birgit completed the Level 1 Board Certification from the Michigan Association of School Boards (MASB). In her time on the Board so far, she has also received: the MASB Award of Merit (Level 2 Certification), the MASB Award of Distinction (Level 3 Certification), and the Advocacy Skills Specialist Certification.
Birgit is a founding member of Blessings In A Backpack - Lake Orion (BIAB-LO), our local chapter of Blessings In A Backpack, which is a nationwide program to assist children on the weekends who are at risk for hunger. With the efforts of many passionate people, this program was established in Lake Orion and is in the process of bringing awareness to the fact that there are hungry children right here in our community that need our support. Birgit is an active part of the Steering Committee serving as the Secretary and also the Volunteer Coordinator of the Transportation Committee.
Birgit is happily married to Greg and is the mother of two amazing children: Emily, a 2012 graduate of LOHS and current senior at Oakland University, and Erich, who graduates from LOHS in June of 2016.
