Orion Oaks principal reads all day for BOOK IT! program

Orion Oaks principal reads to students

Orion Oaks Elementary experienced a Monday the students will remember for years.

Beginning with principal Drew Towlerton on the school's roof as students arrived -- dressed as a giant Chuck Taylor basketball shoe -- the day eventually connected with every student in the building.

Towlerton accepted the Pizza Hut BOOK IT! program Principal Challenge to read from bell to bell and he made the move creatively, reading everywhere from that roof (with a megaphone) to the lunchroom, recess and even with a few bus drivers on the bus at day's end. But the primary focus was classrooms as Towlerton and a few friends from other district buildings appeard in nearly every class throughout the day, reading age-appropriate books and sharing with other students and their reaidng activities.

The students were thrilled and the message was undeniable: National Young Readers Week was a major success in Lake Orion, thanks to Towlerton and the Orion Oaks community.
