Lake Orion Community Schools has a long history of elite band performers and the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association All-State honors showed off the talent this year.
Twelve LOCS students were honored in this year’s rankings with five middle school students seated in the All-State ensembles.
The All-State band travels to the Michigan Music Conference in Grand Rapids in January for a few days of rehearsal and performance, from Jan. 25-27, including performing on Jan. 27. There are rehearsals and sectionals on Jan. 25-26, a special concert to watch on the night of Jan. 26 and then the All-State performance the morning of Jan. 27 at the DeVos Performance Hall in Grand Rapids.
The students auditioned in the week before Halloween and the auditions were submitted via recording to a judging panel, which made the decisions. This year there were 2,614 auditions were scheduled for our 5 ensembles.
Lake Orion makes up a large part of the oboe section with Waldon Middle School’s Amaya Cruz at No. 1, Oakview’s Kevin Vanpoelvoorde at No. 2 and Waldon’s Erica Fischer at No. 4.
Scripps’ Paige Walker is No. 1 among the tenor saxophones and Waldon’s Michael Deprez was No. 7 among the trumpets.
Seven other band members were named to the All-State honorable mention.
