Frequently Asked Questions About Carpenter Year Round Elementary School

What is year-round education?

Year-Round Education is an alternative to the traditional September-June school calendar. The school year is restructured so that the long summer vacation is shortened and vacation periods are distributed throughout the year, resulting in a more balanced calendar. It is a way of adjusting time to advance learning.

Why year-round education?

Teachers generally spend the first four to five weeks of school in the fall reviewing in order to bring students back to skill levels of the preceding school year. Shortening the summer break advances learning as it:

  • Reduces time spent in review
  • Reduces the loss of learning which can occur during the traditional 8-10 weeks of summer vacation
  • Enhances student retention of learning.

Who can attend Carpenter "Year-Round" Elementary?

As a focus school, any student living within the district boundaries of Lake Orion Community Schools is able to attend Carpenter.

If I have children in the middle school or high school, do they have different breaks than Carpenter Year-Round Elementary?
