We are pleased to present you with the Annual Education Report (AER) which provides key information on the 2010-2011 educational progress for Lake Orion High School. The AER addresses the complex reporting information required by federal and state laws. This report contains information about student assessment, Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) and teacher quality, as well as PA 25 state law reporting requirements. AYP
For 2010-2011, Lake Orion High School did not make Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) as a result of the subgroup of students with disabilities not meeting the required target for proficiency in English language arts and mathematics. If we do not make AYP for two years in a row, we will be identified for school improvement. We are addressing these critical areas through the implementation of a Response to Intervention System. This system will utilize a team approach to support the needs of students who are struggling academically. Additionally, LOHS is identifying and implementing specific instructional strategies designed to improve the achievement of students struggling in the identified areas of AYP.
State law requires that we also report additional information.
Description of Lake Orion High School and Student Enrollment
Lake Orion High School is the only high school within Lake Orion Community Schools. It houses students in grades 9-12. Lake Orion High School offers a broad-based curriculum with numerous options for all students. Enrollment is open only to those students living within the Lake Orion Community School's boundary. Learning Option is an alternative education program located at Lake Orion High School that attracts a variety of students in grades 9-12 who have experienced limited success in the traditional high school setting.
Lake Orion High School students also have an opportunity to attend the International Academy. The International Academy is a public, tuition-free, high school of choice for students of 14 Oakland County school districts collaborating in consortium with university and business partners. Commencing with ninth grade, it provides a unique blend of rigorous academic standards and practical, career-related learning throughout the 190-day school year. Featuring the world-recognized International Baccalaureate as the centerpiece of its curriculum, it concentrates on preparing students for success past secondary education and the world beyond. Lake Orion selects ten students each year to enter the International Academy. The ten students are selected through a lottery held at Lake Orion Community Schools.
Lake Orion High School juniors and seniors also have the opportunity to enroll at Oakland Schools Technical Campus (OSTC). They will attend either the morning or the afternoon session along with students from Pontiac, Avondale, Rochester and Oxford school districts. Students will earn four (4) credits at Lake Orion High School and four (4) credits at OSTC per year. Bus transportation is provided for all students attending OSTC.
School Improvement
The Board of Education authorizes and supports the formation of building level school improvement committees at each building within the district. Based on information gathered throughout the school year, the School Improvement Team looks at revising, eliminating or evolving current goals for the following year. Information gathered includes standardized test scores analysis, teacher observation, information gathered through survey or other devices for parent/student input. School Improvement is a continuous process at Lake Orion High School. Building School Improvement Plans are reviewed annually and submitted to the State. Goals:
- Learning Environment: Improve student engagement resulting in increased student achievement. Improve the learning environment so that all students at Lake Orion High School feel safe.
- Math: All students at Lake Orion High School will increase their mathematical reasoning skills.
- Reading: All students at Lake Orion High School will increase their ability to read for comprehension in all content areas.
- Writing: All students at Lake Orion High School will increase their ability to write with precision in all content areas.

Specialized Schools
Our school district provides educational programs, services and support to certified special education students throughout the District. During the 2010-11 school year, there were 944 students who were in need of special education support services. From this group, 25 students required specialized services outside of the Lake Orion school district. Those students attended Waterford and Bloomfield Hills School Districts.
Curriculum
Lake Orion Community Schools continues to implement a comprehensive curriculum for all students. The curriculum is based on and aligns with the Michigan Department of Education's Michigan Curriculum Framework and the Grade Level Content Expectations (GLCE's) in grades K-8 and Course Content Expectations in grades 9-12. Local Assessments
At LOHS we use a variety of qualitative and quantitative methods (in addition to MME and MEAP) to assess the whole child. Students are assessed both formally and informally in all classes using a variety of instruments including projects, performances and technology based presentations. Common assessments in mathematics, language arts, science and social studies were developed by Lake Orion teachers and are administered to all students.
