The Lake Orion High School Winter Guard had an outstanding weekend at the Winter Guard International Regional in Carmel, Ind., finishing in third place, the team's highest-ever finish.
To reach such an impressive finish, the Dragons endured three rounds of competition -- preliminaries and semifinals on Saturday and finals on Sunday -- facing off against perennial powers Carmel and Marian Catholic (Ill.)
Lake Orion amazed on Saturday, surprising many with the day's best score, and followed it up with the season's strongest run in the finals, according to coach Bryan Ayala. It wasn't enough to win, but LOHS finished less than a point from first place and was over three points ahead of fourth place.
This was one of the biggest Winter Guard International shows of the season and prepared the Dragons for the WGI World Championship in Dayton, Ohio, in April. In the updated national rankings, released on Mon., Feb. 19, LOHS ranked seventh nationally.
A 2014 LOHS grad, Kim Hupperich, was part of the group "Pride of Cincinnati," which won the Indeopendent World category.
The LO Guards compete in the WGI and the MCGC (Michigan Color Guard Circuit) of state of Michigan teams. Their next competition will be next weekend, Feb. 25, at Novi High School when the varsity has its turn at 6:43 p.m.
(Ther Junior Guard will compete at 2:52 p.m. and the Junior Varsity Guard will compete at 4:52 p.m. at Novi as well.)
