August 15, 2011

Dear Parents and Community Members:

We are pleased to present you with the Annual Education Report (AER) which provides key information on the 2010-2011 educational progress for Scripps Middle School. The AER addresses the complex reporting information required by federal and state laws. This report contains information about student assessment, Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) and teacher quality, as well as PA 25 state law reporting requirements. If you have any questions about the AER or PA25 information, please contact Mr. Dan Haas for assistance.

The AER is available for you to review electronically by visiting the following web site http://www.lakeorion.k12.mi.us/scripps or you may review a copy from the main office at the school.

AYP
For 2010-2011, Scripps Middle made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) in English language arts and mathematics. While we are pleased to have reached this important goal, we are continuously working to improve. We appreciate the continued support of parents, staff and our community in this effort.

State law requires that we also report additional information.

Description of Scripps Middle and Student Enrollment
Scripps Middle is one of three middle schools within Lake Orion Community Schools. Each middle school provides enrollment only to those students living within the school's boundary. Scripps Middle houses grades 6-8 in which students are assigned to teams for their core academic classes (Science, Social Studies, Math and Language Arts). Throughout their three years in middle school, students develop new areas of interest through a variety of exploratory and elective classes including modern languages, art, technology and computer applications, life management and physical education. Scripps Middle offers a wide range of clubs, sports, intramural activities and extracurricular activities.

School Improvement
The Board of Education authorizes and supports the formation of building level school improvement committees at each building within the district. All of Scripps' teachers are involved in the process of developing, assessing and revising all school improvement goals. Based on information gathered throughout the school year, the School Improvement Team looks at revising, eliminating or evolving current goals for the following year. Information gathered includes standardized test scores analysis, teacher observation, information gathered through survey or other devices for parent/student input. School Improvement is a continuous process at Scripps Middle School. Building School Improvement Plans are reviewed annually and submitted to the State. The Scripps Middle School Improvement Plan may be viewed at the Scripps website.

Goals:

  • Math: All students will be proficient on the mathematics MEAP test.
  • Reading: All student's reading scores will improve, or students will be proficient in reading on the MEAP.
  • Science: All students at Scripps Middle School will be proficient in science.
  • Social Studies: All students will be proficient in Social Studies.

The Scripps Middle School Improvement Plan may be viewed at the Scripps website.

Specialized Schools
Our school district provides educational programs, services and support to certified special education students throughout the District. During the 2010-11 school year, there were 944 students who were in need of special education support services. From this group, 25 students required specialized services outside of the Lake Orion school district. Those students attended Waterford and Bloomfield Hills School Districts.

Curriculum
Lake Orion Community Schools continues to implement a comprehensive curriculum for all students. The curriculum is based on and aligns with the Michigan Department of Education's Michigan Curriculum Framework and the Grade Level Content Expectations (GLCE's) in grades K-8 and Course Content Expectations in grades 9-12. The curriculum at Scripps is synonymous with the district's curriculum. Additional information on the curriculum can be found at http://www.lakeorion.k12.mi.us/Distcurriculum.htm

Local Assessments
At Scripps Middle we use a variety of qualitative and quantitative methods (in addition to MEAP) to assess the whole child. Students are assessed both formally and informally in all classes using a variety of instruments including projects, performances and technology based presentations. Common assessments in mathematics, language arts, science and social studies were developed by Lake Orion teachers and are administered to all students.
